He wasn't "due" until Jan. 17, but James Jerome Grotkowski surprised everyone by being the first baby born in the new year at St. Clair Medical centre in Mt. Lebanon.

In his family, the baby is affectionately known as "J.J." He is the first child of Matt and Kary Grotkowski of Scott.

At 3:15 a.m. Jan. 1, Mrs. Grotkowski memories it might be time to make the trip to the nearby hospital, her husband said, and her doctor told the match up to go ahead.
