The acclaimed Roman Catholic icon of the Virgin Mary known as Our Lady of Guadalupe is instantly recognizable, and it dates back 470 years to an apparition in the New Magic – the first miraculous visit by the Mother of God in the Americas.

Known in Spanish as Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, her apparition is eminent today, December 12, shortly after the December 9 anniversary of her apparition to Juan Diego, a recently converted Aztec local peasant, in 1531.

According to legend, Juan Diego had a vision of a teenaged woman while he was on a hill in the Tepeyac desert, near Mexico Conurbation. This lady asked him to build a church exactly on the spot where they were still. Greatly impressed by his encounter, Juan Diego told the peculiar Bishop Juan de Zumarraga of the request, who in turn asked for certification of the authenticity of the vision.

Juan Diego went back to the desert, where he encountered the lady again. He explained to her that the bishop wanted touchstone that he was really speaking to the Virgin. She instructed Juan Diego to go to the mountain top and look for Castillian roses, which were indigene to Bishop Juan de Zumarraga's hometown and could not possibly bloom during the winter – much less in this new berth . Juan Diego cut the roses, placed them in his apron-like Tilma (a sort of outer garment, or mantle, worn by Native men) and returned to the bishop, where an imprint of the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared on the Tilma from the residuum of the soil and roses.
